Graphic Design of Scheld'Apen
Description:
From 1998 to 2013, a former railway canteen on the d'Herbouvillekaai in Antwerp was transformed into a cultural centre by young idealists, crooks and enthusiasts calling themselves Scheld'apen. It became home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events in those 15 years, before it was inevitably demolished by urban expansion plans. All these events created a flood of visual communication, a huge flow of printed media that fascinated artists and Scheld'apen enthusiasts Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. By collecting items and building on an already existing physical archive, they decided to put a selection of works into a book: Graphic Design of Scheld'apen. 'Graphic Design of Scheld'apen' is the result of two years of collecting, three archive residencies in Het Bos (the new home of the still existing Scheld'apen organisation) and a short scanning residency in the Frans Masereel Centrum. The book contains over 200 graphic works by various artists. 240 pages, illustrated, 29.7 x 21.6 cm, paperback, Dutch/English
