Between March 2023 and January 2024, Renée Lorie and Erien Withouck collaborated with De Maalbeek community center of Etterbeek in Brussels. They transformed a caravan into a studio and asked inhabitants and passersby where they felt safe and comfortable. They posed questions such as: What does a safe space mean for you? Both fictional and non-fictional places surfaced during these discussions. This initiative led to various walks around the neighborhood with people they met in the caravan. They shared, and we listened. From these conversations, four prominent themes emerged: light, community, nest, and nature. The culmination of this project was a series of ateliers where participants were invited to create various objects and texts inspired by the themes uncovered during the walks.
Photographs taken by Renée Lorie, Erien Withouck, and the walkers.
