Tom Liekens (°1977) makes monumental paintings and woodcuts. He is fascinated by the unrealistic way fauna and flora are represented in paintings, fairy tales or films. The artificial world of zoos, natural history museums, curiosity cabinets, and hunting rooms is also a lasting source of inspiration. In his canvases, he expresses the animal in man and the humane in the animal. Liekens shows how we relate to nature and to “other” animals. The work is not only full of art and cultural-historical quotations but also implicitly refers to current events.
Glenn Geerinck (°1984) obtained his Master's in Fine Arts and Photography at Sint Lucas School of Arts, Antwerp. His work is driven by a spontaneous and open attitude towards the still image. His photographs are often a record of small actions he whether or not staged. Sometimes Geerinck arranges objects which become actors, evoking a new meaning to the space they are set in. At other times, he acts himself within the frame of the camera as an impulsive reaction to a particular moment in time. By activating the inherent stillness of the medium with notions of performance and at the same time reducing a three-dimensional action to a two-dimensional image, a tension between the ‘now’ and the ‘forever’ is captured.
