Verstrengeld by Floor Martens
Floor Martens' Verstrengeld, "Your pain is not mine to bear, but it can feed my sorrow".

Verstrengeld (“Entwined”) by Dutch photographer Floor Martens is a poetic and deeply personal analogue exploration of the interdependence between the human body, nature, and time, capturing the zeitgeist of the younger generation. Martens uses nude bodies, trees, flowers, and skies to draw compelling parallels between fragility and endurance, life and loss. The resulting visual narrative is an immersive sensory experience—combining photography with text, sound, and sculptural elements—that reflects on transformation and decay.

This publication is more than a photobook; it’s a visual elegy and a philosophical inquiry, inviting readers to contemplate our fundamental entanglement with the living world. An essential acquisition for photography collectors and readers seeking profound visual storytelling created by a female Gen Z photographer.

“There is a magical quality to capturing images, the outcome still in limbo. A composition formed by interwoven opposites. That dynamic of being seen has the power to give us all the meaning we need—once shared, it grows exponentially. Your pain is not mine to bear, but it can feed my sorrow.I see confusion in your eyes, because I too have experienced it. Look closely, and you’ll see that the rings of a tree are like my fingerprints; the veins of the leaf are like my own. The big is reflected in the small, and the small is reflected in the big. It is a metaphysical world that we can roam, one embroidered by what we perceive as ordinary. Life is beautiful because it has the blessing of decay to exist.”

Floor Martens (b. 1998 Reuver) graduated in Fine Arts at the Maastricht Institute of Arts in 2019. In her practice, she explores the transformation processes of humans, animals, and nature, as well as the connections between them. The values of our physical material are often an important subject in her work, as well as themes such as intimacy, emotion, (in)tangibility, and vulnerability. By intervening in the process of decay or holding onto its traces, she finds a way to hold on to memory and keep something alive. Photographing bodies of loved ones, trees, flowers, self-portraits, the sea, or sky has become a way for Martens to freeze time. In stills, she tries to capture corporeal expressions of their psyches. Whether an animal’s life is cut short or a body forever distilled in a frame, Martens looks for vestiges of the soul, of the ineffable, in moments of arrested movement. For these subjects, she mainly uses photographic images, printed in analogue techniques, but she also uses other media, such as written text, audio, installation, book form, and sculpture.
